The movie starts off with Merlin's death at the hands of evil soceress Morgana le Fay (Alice Krige). Before his final breath, however, he gave his trusted apprentice, Balthazar Blake (Nicholas Cage) a dragon ring which would lead him to his successor, the Prime Merlinian.
Centuries pass before Balthazar found 'the one' in Dave Stutler. Hence begin the journey to protect and train Dave for the inevitable battle to defeat evil sorceress Morgana le Fay, in a bid to save the world. That's the short of it.
